Stephanopogon minutaNaoji Yubuki and Brian S. Leander
Stephanopogon minuta feeds on small diatoms and has been reported from marine habitats in China (Lei et al 1999) and the west coast of Canada (Yubuki and Leander 2008). This species has been described at both the ultrastructural and molecular phylogenetic levels (Yubuki and Leander 2008).
Molecular phylogenetic analyses of small subunit ribosomal RNA gene sequence show that S. minuta is closely related to the tetraflagellate Percolomonas cosmopolitus within the Heterolobosea.
Although S. minuta is one of three different species of Stephanopogon that possess three anterior barbs, S. minuta can be distinguished from the others based on the relative size and the number of the longitudinal rows of flagella on the ventral side of the cell.
- Cells 20–35 µm long and 10–16 µm in wide.
- Cells vase-shaped and curved toward the right side.
- Three anterior barbs present on the ventral side of the slit-like cytostome
- Eight longitudinal rows of flagella on ventral side of cell
- Two isomorphic nuclei
