Introduction

Figure. Oral view of arm crown
of S. japonica. Drawing from
Kubodera and Okutani (2011).

Stoloteuthis japonica is based on a single immature male of 10 mm ML taken off one of the Okinawa Islands at 25°48.98´N, 126°30.66´E. Because of its small size, characteristics that could distinguish this species may not be developed. This species lies within the latitudinal range of Iridoteuthis iris although it is found further west than is known for the latter species (i.e., I. iris is known from from as far north and west as 32°N, 177°E).

The junior author of this page suspects that Stoloteuthis japonica is a junior synonym of Iridoteuthis iris. However, apparent differences exist in the shape of the funnel-locking apparatus and the absence of a posterior fin lobe in S. japonica. The uncertainty of the presence of a tentacular organ and the position of the photophore tubes needs resolution. The absence of maturity related features of the arm, so important in species identification in the Heteroteuthinae, emphasize the need for larger specimens.

This page is a Tree of Life Branch Page.

Each ToL branch page provides a synopsis of the characteristics of a group of organisms representing a branch of the Tree of Life. The major distinction between a branch and a leaf of the Tree of Life is that each branch can be further subdivided into descendent branches, that is, subgroups representing distinct genetic lineages.

For a more detailed explanation of the different ToL page types, have a look at the Structure of the Tree of Life page.
